Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 4mm aperture actually stop?
Our 4mm aluminium mesh (3mm x 4mm aperture) stops leaves, twigs and general debris, and it also keeps birds and mice out of your gutters and roof. Be honest with yourself though: gutter guard minimises what gets in, it doesn't eliminate everything, so very fine matter like seeds, blossom and pine needles can still pass through or sit on top.
This is 1000mm wide. Is that the right width for my roof?
Our mesh-only comes in 250mm, 500mm, 750mm and 1000mm widths, so 1000mm is the widest we make. It's the one to reach for when you're spanning wide runs like tile valleys or large box gutters; for narrower gutter and valley runs a smaller width is usually plenty, which also keeps the cost down. The right width really depends on your specific roof profile and gutter setup, so if you're not sure which to order, follow our installation guides or give us a call on 1300 156 197 and we'll talk it through before you buy.
What's the difference between mesh-only and a full kit?
Mesh-only is just the aluminium roll with no saddles, clips, trims or screws, so it suits DIYers who already have their fixings or have a fastening method sorted. If you'd rather have everything in one box, look at our full kits instead, and if you've got an unusual roof or box gutter give us a call on 1300 156 197 and we'll build a custom kit.
How is it sold, and can you cut it to a custom width?
It's sold in 10-metre increments (one roll is 10m), not by the single metre. This 1000mm roll is a standard width, but if you need something non-standard we can cut custom widths for a small $25-per-roll cut fee, just get in touch before ordering.
We get birds in the valleys. Do I need to mesh those too?
Here's an honest tip that can save you money: for bird protection the guard only needs to go on the gutters, not the valleys, so you often don't need valley mesh purely for birds. If you're meshing 1000mm-wide tile valleys it's usually because of leaf and debris load in those big runs, not the birds themselves.
Will this stop possums?
No, aluminium won't stop a determined possum. We've seen possums rip straight through aluminium mesh to get back to their young in the roof, so if possums are your concern you need steel, and we can source steel kits on request, just call 1300 156 197.
Is this any good for bushfire areas?
This 4mm aluminium mesh is your standard leaf, debris, bird and mouse protection, and it's AS 3959-2018 compliant, CSIRO tested and non-combustible. If embers are your main worry, switch to our 2mm Ember Guard (2mm x 2mm aperture) instead, which has the finer aperture designed to block wind-borne embers as well as smaller debris.
How long does the coating last, and what about shipping and warranty?
This roll is aluminium mesh finished with a premium powder coating that's salt-spray tested past 1000 hours, so it's built to hold its colour and resist fading even in coastal conditions. If you go on to add our kit hardware (saddles, clips, trims and screws), that gear uses steel from leading Australian suppliers including BlueScope(R) with Colorbond-matched coatings, which is why it resists the fading and rusty-red screw coatings you can get from cheap overseas imports. It's all backed by our 20-Year Industry-Leading Warranty, which covers degradation of the material itself, the mesh and coating breaking down, but not damage from falling branches, hail or neglect. Shipping is free over $500 and a flat $20 under, dispatched from our Gold Coast warehouse, typically 1-7 days to metro areas.
